Why Mirror Sites, Doorway Pages and Splash Screens
Are Bad For Your Website

Bookmark and Share

Mirror sites are duplicate content and Google doesn't like duplicate content. Doorway pages are seen by Google as cheating and they will push you down in the rankings. Splash Screens usually have no content and so Google won't even bother sending anyone to them. Here's a little more detailed information...

Mirror sites

Has a “web expert” ever suggested that you create Mirror sites (websites that have identical content as your site but are on a different URL) to get more targeted traffic?

If they have, they've given you very bad advice.

Most search engines consider “Mirroring” a site as spamming. In other words, they view such practices as attempting to get higher rankings by cheating.

While some web owners have perfectly legitimate reasons for creating mirror sites such as wanting a shorter URL and email address or wanting to make sure they have the .net, .org or .biz version of their site name, this can have the unfortunate reaction of lowering their placement in search engines with no way to rectify the situation.

Doorway pages and Splash Screens

Doorway pages (using other domain names to point to your site) used to be popular with the “Get Rich Quick” sites and other “heavily-hyped information” sites. In fact, some mistakenly still use the practice.

Splash Screens are very popular with perfectly legitimate businesses who may be trying to cover more than one aspect of their business with a single site. The splash page simply sends them to whichever division of the company a visitor is more interested in.

Unfortunately, this is what Google has to say about Doorway pages and Splash Screens under explanations on why your site may not get indexed:

"You employ doorway pages. Google does not encourage the use of doorway pages. We want to point users to content pages, not to doorways or splash screens."

This is why I strongly encourage you to have vital and useful content on every page and a headline at the top filled with keywords and a powerful pitch to capture a viewer's interest in the three seconds you have before they click away.
